  About Us

The Idaho Department of Correction provides incarceration facilities for adult felons sentenced by the courts, presentence reports for the courts, and supervision services for probationers and parolees. The department operates a central administrative office, eight correctional institutions, four community work centers, and 22 probation/parole district and satellite offices.

The department is made up of about 1,500 dedicated workers. A majority of the employees are correctional officers.

The Department is made up of four divisions: Prisons, Community Corrections, Education and Treatment and Management Services. The Prisons Division has oversight of prisons and inmates. The Community Corrections Division manages probation, parole and community work centers. Education and Treatment has oversight of the treatment in prisons and community corrections, the mental health program and Robert Janss Schools in prisons statewide. The Management Services Division has oversight of Information Services, Construction, Financial Services, Inmate Placement, Central Records, and Evaluation and Compliance.

The Department handles adult felons sentenced by the courts. Our felon caseload can be broken down into four categories:

  • Those on Probation - Probationers are convicted offenders who have had their sentences suspended and given freedom during good behavior under the supervision of a parole officer. This category makes up the largest number of the department's offender population.
  • Those on Parole - Parolees are inmates who have served a specific prison term and who are out in the community. They have agreed to abide by stated conditions set by the Commission of Pardons and Parole for a specified time period as a condition of release.
  • Those Serving Prison Time
  • Retained Jurisdiction (Riders)- This program is made up of minimum and medium custody, 120-day retained jurisdiction commitments who have been sent by the courts for evaluation. The program provides a sentencing alternative for the courts to target those offenders who might, after a period of programming and evaluation, be viable candidates for probation and reintegration into the community.
