IDOC adopted its current mission statement in June 2007. The mission serves as a compass to guide department decisions. The current mission statement honors the department's statutory obligation to protect Idaho, while providing vision for the IDOC way to accomplish that mission.

The mission, vision and values are a part of the department strategic plan. Updated each June, the strategic plan outlines key goals and performance measures for the agency.

The Strategic Plan includes a list of performance measures to gauge how the department is achieving its goals. Updated each September, these measures are provided to the Division of Financial Management and become a part of the budget document for lawmakers.

The current performance measures include information on staff turn-over and safety in facilities.
