IDOC adopted its a new mission statement in July 2013. The mission serves as a compass to guide staff. The current mission statement is short, measurable and provides a single focus for all staff and honors the department's statutory obligation to protect Idaho.

The mission, when combined with the new vision, is designed to inspire staff to make a difference in the lives of offenders.

The mission, vision and values are a part of the department strategic plan. Updated each June, the strategic plan outlines key goals and performance measures for the agency.

The Strategic Plan includes a list of performance measures to gauge how the department is achieving its goals. Updated each September, these measures are provided to the Division of Financial Management and become a part of the budget document for lawmakers.

The current performance measures include information on staff turn-over and safety in facilities.
