  Visitors Must Complete an Application

All visitors must complete a visitation application and acknowledgment of visiting rules prior to being allowed visitation. Visitation applications, visiting rules and related forms may be obtained by the offender in his or her housing unit and then mailed to the prospective visitors. Applications may also be obtained by downloading them from the Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) Web site. The “link” to those sites is noted below.

Only the approved visiting rules and visiting regulations forms signed by the applicant will be accepted for processing.

The proposed visitor will fill out the visiting form completely, read the rules and regulations form and sign both the visiting application and the acknowledgment of the visiting rules. Additional forms for minors must also be filled out as required. Mail the completed and signed visiting application materials and acknowledgment of rules to the facility in which the offender resides.

Falsifications or omissions on the visitation application may be cause for denial of visitation privileges.

  Process

Processing Time
Offenders and proposed visitors can expect an average two to four- (2-4) week’s minimum processing time for visitation applications.

Upon receipt of the visitation application forms, the visiting room supervisor or designee will review the visiting request for completeness. If the application is not complete, the inmate will be notified in writing of the denial of visitation due to an incomplete application.

Background Check
If the application is complete, a criminal background check and/or any other information necessary to verify the eligibility of the visiting applicant will be requested. The visiting room officer’s supervisor will approve or deny the visitation application based on the review of the application, background check, the Visiting Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) and institutional field memoranda.

Reasons for Denial
Normally, visits will be denied if the applicant:

  • Has had a felony arrest within the last five (5) years or drug arrests (misdemeanor or felony) within the last two (2) years.
  • Has visited a different inmate within the last six (6) months.
  • Does not meet the criteria listed in this SOP.

Notification of Approval or Denial
The visiting room officer’s supervisor or facility heads designee will notify the offender of approval or denial of visitation in writing. All denials of visitation will be forwarded to the facility head or designee, as mandated by SOP. Denials of visitation may be appealed in accordance with the visiting SOP.

Maintenance of Visiting Records
All visitation applications will be maintained in the individual offenders visiting file. This file will contain all information regarding visitation. Visitation files will follow offenders through incarceration.

Upon release, discharge, or parole of the offender, the visiting file will be forwarded to central records for retention with the central file. It is the responsibility of the offender to advise visitation applicants of the approval or denial of visitation and facility specific visiting schedules.
