IDOC investigates apparent suicide of inmate

BOISE, May 14, 2014 — The Idaho Department of Correction is investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate who was incarcerated at the South Boise Women’s Correctional Center.

At 11:45 a.m. Sunday, Janeal Walker, IDOC #83021 (DOB: 02/25/1985), was found hanging in her room. SBWCC staff immediately initiated resuscitation measures, which paramedics continued upon their arrival. Walker was pronounced dead today at a Boise hospital.

Walker’s criminal record includes convictions for three counts of possession of a controlled substance in Ada County. She would have been eligible for parole on Nov. 1, 2014. Her full-term release date was Oct. 31, 2021.

As IDOC does in response to all unattended deaths in the South Boise Correctional Complex, the department has asked the Ada County Sheriff’s Office for assistance with the investigation of the circumstances surrounding Walker’s death.

SBWCC is a 284-bed, women’s treatment and transition facility in the South Boise Correctional Complex.
