It’s almost time for kids to head back to school, and the men and women of the Idaho Department of Correction are helping kids in need get ready.

On Saturday, officers from IDOC’s Division of Prisons and the Division of Probation and Parole joined forces with officers and deputies from Treasure Valley law enforcement agencies to take about 100 children and teens back-to-school shopping at the Walmart in Meridian.

Each shopper, ranging in age from five to 17, got $200 to spend on shoes, clothing and hygiene items. They also got backpacks filled with school supplies.

The event is officially called Shop with a Sheriff, but elsewhere it’s often called Shop with a Cop.

The Ada County Sheriff’s Employees Association organizes Shop with a Sheriff and invited IDOC staff to participate. The purchases are funded through donations from the public.

School resource officers and counselors help select the kids based on their financial need or the potential benefit they might receive from having a positive experience with a person wearing a uniform.

IDOC staff also help with ACSEA’s annual Shop with a Sheriff event just before Christmas.
