Inmate dies after collapsing at Idaho Correctional Institution-Orofino

BOISE, Idaho, Jan. 24, 2018 – At the request of the Idaho Department of Correction, the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate at Idaho Correctional Institution-Orofino. 

At 2:49 p.m. Tuesday, Alexander E. Mecklin collapsed in the Givens Hall weight room. Staff initiated CPR and called 911. An ambulance transported Mecklin to a hospital. He was pronounced dead at 4:21 p.m. 

As it does in the case of all unattended deaths at Idaho Correctional Institution-Orofino, or deaths in which the cause is unknown, the Idaho Department of Correction asked the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mecklin’s death.    

Idaho Correctional Institution-Orofino is a 580-bed, men’s prison in Orofino.
