ISCC Creative Writing Project

Director Atencio shakes hands with participants
By David Mehlhaff, Education Program Manager, Idaho State Correctional Center

Ten inmates from ISCC participating in a creative writing class, read their personal compositions in front of an audience of approximately 70 visitors from around the Treasure Valley and Magic Valley area on April 11.

The presentation was conceived by Shane Brown, Theater Instructor and Director from the College of Southern Idaho, who has been teaching the class as a volunteer twice a month for the past six months.

Inmates had opportunity to develop and hone their writing and presentation skills as they gave voice to their personal life reflections.

There were tears, laughter and applause as the audience sat in rapt attention for an hour and twenty minutes.

The evening ended with a plaque presented to Instructor Brown; Camille Barigar, Director of Community Education, CSI; and Lydia Basquill-Sakolsky, Project Flux, Boise.

ISCC is grateful for the volunteer commitment of Shane Brown in providing this opportunity for our inmate population.

We hope to continue partnering with the College of Southern Idaho in the future.

CSI is planning later theatrical productions in Twin Falls, Caldwell, Salt Lake, and Boise titled “Sentences” featuring the reflection writings of our inmates.
