ISCI ceremony celebrates educational achievements

Graduate shakes BOC member Wilson's hand
By Kim Wardwell, GED Instructor, Idaho State Correctional Institution

Cindy Wilson, Idaho Board of Corrections member, gave the commencement speech to GED graduates on May 31. Ten of the fifteen completers were still onsite at ISCI and attended the commencement exercise. Additional students were recognized for completing programs in 8th Grade Literacy, Financial Literacy, Microsoft Office Specialist Certification, Administrative Services, and NCCER Core Curriculum. In all, there were a total of 49 students recognized.

Wilson shared with students the joy she feels as a teacher when students succeed. She encouraged ISCI students to continue to grow and take on challenges.

Graduates received additional words of inspiration from ISCI Deputy Warden Randy Valley, Education Director Julie Oye-Johnson, and ISCI Education Program Manager Bill Hale.

One key point stressed several times by the speakers was the significance of the familial support as evidenced by the 21 family members attending the ceremony. Afterwards, visitors and inmates had an opportunity to visit and talk while enjoying doughnuts and coffee.
