The Idaho Volunteer Lawyers Program has implemented a program called “Soundstart” providing information on Child Custody, Paternity, Guardianship and Child Support.

Quarterly, a lawyer from IVLP volunteers their time to come to the South Boise Women’s Correctional Center and South Idaho Correctional Center PRC unit to present this program.

I have assisted in scheduling these classes for three years and have seen how this program has greatly benefitted these individuals.

Some of the questions asked are:

  • Why should I have a custody order?
  • What happens if I am unable to care for my children for a period?
  • What if I do not have the money to pay for an attorney?

It is interesting to see the reaction when an attorney asks them if they have a will.

Information is provided on how the Idaho Lawyer Volunteer Program works and workshops they can attend when they are released.

The attorneys who have volunteered their time have greatly impacted these ladies.

I have had comments afterwards that attending this program has given them hope to be reunited with their children and what they have learned to assist in giving their children a healthy atmosphere.

This comment is from all the ladies here who have attended:   “Thank you for giving your time to them.”
