Painting the Mental Health Room

Pocatello Women’s Correctional Center is working on providing a more comforting and soothing environment for those struggling inmates that utilize the Mental Health room in medical.

Staring at the same four walls with drab white paint can be depressing, so Inmates Winn and McMahon have provided a therapeutic environment by painting a mural inside of the mental health room. The painting is a soothing beach scene including palm trees, the ocean, and a boat titled the S.S. Winn.

McMahon stated, “I believe that with the painting and the sound machine that can be used, people can escape in a positive way.”

Winn stated, “Having something to visually see to escape is something I wish we had a long time ago.”

Winn and McMahon chose different images from a selection of pictures and made the scene their own. They worked together for 6 ½ hours on the project. Winn has been drawing since she was 10 years old. McMahon began Art Therapy to help with PTSD after being in the Marine Corp.
