In Lewiston, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas thanks to the inmates assigned to the Givens Hall Works Projects crew at Idaho Correctional Institution-Orofino.

The inmates, known as Red Shirts because of the red shirts they wear while on work assignments outside the prison, spent two weeks in October putting up holiday lights and decorations for the annual Winter Spirit program at Lewiston's Locomotive Park. The inmates will also take down the lights and decorations when the holidays are over.

"The Red Shirts have been doing this for about 14 years, and it's one of their favorite assignments," said ICIO Lt. Greg Heun. "It gives them a chance to give back to society and to experience the holidays themselves."

So far this year, the Red Shirts have provided more than 4,200 hours of community service throughout north central Idaho.
