A Vocational Works Projects crew from South Idaho Correctional Institution has received the highest marks possible for their performance in helping fight the Washington Fire from June 21 to July 5 near the northwestern Nevada town of Gardnerville.

“Two officers – Cpl. Mark Brown and [Ofc.] Shawn Keating  took a 10-man crew to Nevada to fight this fire,” says Jan Pavelec, assistant to SICI’s warden, Steven Little. “Because of the great job they did, all 12 received a certificate of appreciation.”

Investigators say lightning caused the fire. The blaze burned about 18,000 acres

“I’ve been involved in fire since the late 90’s and this crew and their supervision is one of the best I have had help in supply,” wrote the U.S. National Forest Service administrator who rated the SICI team’s performance.

“They went above and beyond on so many occasions I could not count. I would have them in my supply anytime at all,” the administrator wrote.

The photo shows Vocational Works Project Sgt. Michael Hymas on the left and Cpl. Brown on the right. Ofc. Shawn Keating is not pictured.

Thanks to SICI Sgt. Michael Trobock for sending us the photo.
