South Boise Women’s Correctional Center and South Idaho Correctional Institution have begun taking measures to resume normal operations. The two facilities have been on secure status since Friday following disturbances at two nearby prisons.

Idaho State Correctional Institution remains on lockdown. Idaho Maximum Security Institution and Idaho State Correctional Center remain on secure status with portions of the facilities on lockdown.

Correctional staff are monitoring conditions inside those facilities with an eye toward easing the restrictions. No timeline for doing so has been set.

A lockdown means inmates are confined to their cells or bunks. Secure status means inmates are restricted to their housing unit.

“We know inmates and their families want this over with; we do, too,” says Ashley Dowell, chief of the Idaho Department of Correction’s Division of Prisons. “But we simply can’t cut corners when it comes to the safety of our inmates and our staff.
