The ICIO welding program is back

Inmates are assigned gear

Years ago the Idaho Correctional Institution-Orofino welding program was taught at Lewis Clark State College. This required a staff member drive the inmates a total of 2 hours to accommodate the class.

The program was brought home to the prison this week. Welding booths were built, welding gear was obtained, and electrical modifications were made to the ICIO maintenance building to handle a line of welders.

Seven excited inmates were selected as the first class for the resurrected program, seeking basic welding certification.

The program is headed up by retired IDOC employee, Rich Hull. The irony is that Rich was also the staff member who used to drive inmates to the program in Lewiston.
