The 3-year-old boy started crying as soon as his father stepped outside his family’s home with Officer Matt Thomas in Caldwell.

The boy was no stranger to law enforcement — his mother had been arrested days earlier — and he was terrified his father, who had been arrested before as well, was going back to jail. He recognized the utility belt, blue uniform, and bulletproof vest Thomas was wearing.
