At today’s Idaho Board of Correction meeting, the board honored three North Idaho Correctional Institution security staff members with the Idaho Department of Correction’s Silver Cross Award.

On Dec. 8, 2017, Cpl Virginia Dill, Ofc. Chad Core and Ofc. Donna Mader saved the life of an inmate who was choking on food in NICI’s dining hall.

Here is how NICI Sgt. Daniel Bybee described the incident when nominating Dill, Core and Mader for the award.

“At approximately 1253, during lunch, Cpl. Virginia Dill, CO Chad Core and CO Donna Mader noticed that an inmate appeared to be choking and unable to breathe.

“Cpl. Dill alerted the other officers and called a medical emergency over the radio.

“Cpl. Dill then secured the scene while CO's D. Mader and C. Core attempted abdominal thrusts to clear this inmate's airway.

“After about 3 sets of abdominal thrusts the inmate was able to spit the obstruction out and breathe on his own.

“These officers' quick thinking and decisive actions resulted in the successful clearing of this inmate's airway and the preservation of his life.”

The Silver Cross Award is presented to Idaho Department of Correction staff members who display prompt or alert action that results in a life being saved or the prevention of injury to others.
