The Idaho Department of Correction has presented its Silver Cross Award to two Idaho State Correctional Center officers who helped save the life a suicidal citizen.

On Sept. 7, 2017, the citizen called ISCC and told Lt. Dagoberto Martinez he wanted to say goodbye to a friend, an inmate who was incarcerated at the facility before he killed himself.

The man sounded intoxicated and refused to give his name or his location. The man said he had taken many pills but refused to say what kind.

While Lt. Martinez talked with the man, Sgt. James Frasier gathered information from the inmate about the caller’s identity and address.  Sgt. Frasier relayed the information to Ada County dispatch.  Ada County Sheriff’s deputies contacted the man and provided him with help.

On Oct. 4, IDOC Division of Prisons Chief Ashley Dowell presented Lt. Martinez and Sgt. Frasier with the department’s Silver Cross Award. It is given to correctional professionals who display prompt or alert action resulting in a life being saved or the prevention of serious injury to others and for demonstrating exceptional care for other individuals.
