Update: South Boise Correctional Complex

Restrictions on inmate movements are being at eased at three prisons in the South Boise Correctional Complex -- South Idaho Correctional Institution, South Boise Women’s Correctional Center and Idaho State Correctional Institution.

The other two prisons, Idaho State Correctional Center and Idaho Maximum Security Institution, remain on secure status with some housing units still on lockdown.  

ISCI

All housing units except for Unit 15 are off of lockdown and on secure status. Secure status means inmates can move about in their housing units. They have access to phones, kiosks and showers. 

Unit 15 is on modified secure status. Those inmates have access to the dayroom, phone, kiosks and showers on a scheduled basis.  

As always, inmates who are in restrictive housing for violating institutional rules do not have phone, kiosk or commissary services. 

Visiting for all inmates remains suspended.  

All meals are being served in the housing units. 

SICI

The facility is off secure status and has returned to normal operations. Visiting will resume Thursday, Jan. 11.  Check-in is from 12:30 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. The visiting session begins at 12:45 p.m.

SBWCC

The facility is off secure status and has returned to normal operations. Visiting will resume on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

ISCC

The facility remains on secure status with D-block, E-block and G-block, tier 6 on lockdown. Inmates on lockdown are allowed access to the showers and phones on a scheduled basis.

As always, inmates who are in restrictive housing for violating institutional rules do not have phone, kiosk or commissary services.Visiting for all inmates remains suspended.  

IMSI

The facility remains on secure status with A-block and J-block, tier 3 on lockdown. Inmates on lockdown are allowed access to the showers and phones on a scheduled basis. 

As always, inmates who are in restrictive housing for violating institutional rules do not have phone, kiosk or commissary services.

Visiting for all inmates remains suspended.  

Inmate services

U.S. mail: All inmates in the South Boise Correctional Complex, including those on lockdown, can send and receive mail via the U.S. Postal Service.

Commissary services: Deliveries continue to all inmates including those on lockdown. Inmates on secure status can place commissary orders and send/receive email by using the kiosks in their housing units as well as their Jp5 devices. Inmates on lockdown can place commissary orders and send/receive email only if they have a Jp5 device. As always, inmates who are in restrictive housing for violating institutional rules do not have access to commissary, kiosks or Jp5 devices. 

Looking ahead

The chief of the Idaho Department of Correction’s Division of Prisons, Ashley Dowell, says correctional staff is constantly evaluating conditions inside the prisons with an eye toward easing restrictions.

“The safety of our staff and our inmates guides every step we take,” Dowell says.  “We’re making progress but are not going to put someone’s life at risk by rushing this process.”
