Following the rescope, the new cost estimate for phase two of the F-Block retrofit is $910,802.

The retrofit of the F-Block will modify the existing execution chamber to accommodate both lethal injection and firing squad executions. The project includes constructing a dedicated space for the firing squad and all procedures associated with it, as well as updating the existing witness areas to allow for observation of both execution methods.

The facility’s design prioritizes all necessary precautions, including witness and staff safety, sound mitigation, and ballistic protection.

While we cannot share blueprints due to safety and security protocols, photos of the existing chamber are available on our website.

To ensure compliance with House Bill 37, which designates execution by firing squad as the primary method of execution in Idaho as of July 1, 2026, the Idaho Department of Correction is set to begin phase two of the retrofit of the execution unit in F-Block at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution to implement this method.

The current estimated time frame to complete this retrofit is approximately 6 to 9 months. Following completion of the remodel, the execution team will need time to conduct training to be ready to carry out an execution by firing squad beginning July 2026. The Department is confident it will meet the required timelines and will do so on budget.

As of May 23, 2025, F-Block will be taken completely offline due to construction. As a result, all executions and execution-related procedures will be unavailable, including execution by lethal injection.
