Week 1: New Hire Paperwork & Facility Tours

• You'll attend New Hire Paperwork and spend time touring the facilities, pre-requisite training, and getting acquainted with the Training team.

Week 2: New Employee Orientation

• You’ll join other new employees for New Employee Orientation in Boise* to learn more about IDOC, hear from agency and division leadership about how you can further your impact, and learn some essential skills.

Weeks 3-4: Job Shadowing at Facilities

• Shadow an experienced field training officer
• Hands-off perspective of correctional officer job responsibilities
• Experience working in an institutional setting with residents

Weeks 5-11: Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy

Schedule: Monday-Friday, start and end times may vary

Academy coursework includes:

• Arrest techniques
• Con games
• CPR and first aid 
• Report writing
• Effective communication
• Firearms certification
• And much more!

Attending and passing the Correctional Officer academy is a requirement of the job. You’ll spend time learning critical classroom material and practicing hands-on defensive tactics. You’ll build your physical endurance through regular group physical training, prove your academic knowledge through weekly exams, and demonstrate your newly acquired skills in scenario testing and on-the-job training. To pass the Academy, you must maintain a 75% scoring average for written exams and score a 75% on the certification exam. During the last week of the academy, you will participate in firearms training and testing.

* Travel, hotel, and per diem expenses are paid by IDOC for ICIO, NICI, TFCRC, IFCRC, PWCC, and SAWC staff.
